“Turning the air conditioner off frequently saves energy.” “Using low fan speed reduces electricity costs.” These are common beliefs—but both may actually be misconceptions. When it comes to saving energy, the key is not simply using your air conditioner less, but using it wisely. Here are three simple tips to help you stay comfortable while reducing energy use.
Air conditioners consume less energy when they reach the set temperature quickly. It is often assumed that a lower fan speed saves energy, but this is a common misconception. An air conditioner uses the most power immediately after starting, when it is working to cool the room. If the fan speed is kept low, it takes longer to reach the set temperature, which can increase overall energy use. So what is the best fan setting? If your air conditioner has an Auto mode, it will initially use a stronger airflow to cool the room quickly, then automatically switch to a lower fan speed once the set temperature is reached. This allows the unit to operate more efficiently, making Auto mode a recommended setting whenever available.
Air conditioners use the most electricity when they first start operating. If the unit is turned off once the room has cooled and then switched back on after the temperature rises, it needs a large amount of energy to cool the room back to the set temperature. In contrast, once the set temperature is reached, maintaining it requires much less energy. For this reason, keeping the air conditioner running while you are in the room can often save more energy than turning it on and off repeatedly.
