We take tens of thousands of breaths every day, yet the air around us never seems to run out. Why is that? The answer lies in Earth's long history and the continuous cycle of oxygen and carbon dioxide driven by living organisms. By exploring how our planet has changed over the past 4.6 billion years, we can better understand how the air we breathe came to be.
Earth's atmosphere began to form about 4.6 billion years ago, around the time the planet itself was born. Gases released from deep within the Earth accumulated and created the first atmosphere, known as the primitive atmosphere. This early atmosphere consisted mainly of gases such as methane, ammonia, and carbon dioxide. Unlike the air we breathe today, it contained very little oxygen. So when did oxygen appear, and where did it come from?
Oxygen was first produced by living organisms that emerged in Earth's oceans. Once oceans formed on the Earth, life began to develop within them. These organisms absorbed carbon dioxide and released oxygen through photosynthesis. Over time, oxygen spread from the oceans into the atmosphere and gradually accumulated in the air. As oxygen levels increased, it led to the formation of the ozone layer, which helped block harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching Earth's surface. This made it possible for life to expand beyond the oceans and eventually thrive on land.
We breathe oxygen every day, but why does it not eventually disappear? The answer lies in the ongoing exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between plants and animals. Humans and other animals take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Plants do the opposite, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen through photosynthesis. Together, these processes keep oxygen and carbon dioxide cycling through the atmosphere, helping maintain both the amount of air and the balance of its composition.
In recent years, the balance of the air that has been maintained for so long has begun to change. Activities such as manufacturing and driving vehicles release increasing amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, while forests that produce oxygen are gradually being lost. As a result, carbon dioxide levels continue to rise, altering the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide. These changes are also considered to be linked to global warming and have become an important challenge on a global scale.
